Hill & May was set up in 2017 by friends Emily Stewart and Sarah Serocold. Our little company was born from our own experiences of trying to buy fun and different lampshades to decorate our own homes with.
Struck by how unaffordable and limiting the lampshades available were we set out to design and make our own. We found we could choose our own fabrics, colours, trims, materials and make something beautiful and unique we wouldn't see in someone else’s house. Soon enough we were being asked to make lampshades for friends and family and a small business was born.
We have sourced delicate silks, rare Saris, and block printed cottons and linens and designed a range of joyful pleated lampshades.
Our collection of lampshades are made from Block printed fabrics: a patterned fabric with a rich heritage. While block printing designs onto fabric most likely originated in China about 4,500 years ago, it was on the Indian subcontinent where hand-blocked fabric reached its highest visual expression. The unique technique of carved wooden design printed onto cloth has been perfected by the artisans of Bagru, Jaipur and all over Rajasthan for over a 1000 years. The process is not only painstakingly laborious but also anciently beautiful.
Colour, usage and designs have changed in our craft, but the spirit remains the same.
Each block print is a work of art. Each represents a real connection with the present day and the past. We couldn't love it more!
Hill & May endeavour to source contemporary colours and patterns of block printed fabrics and saris to design into lampshades that will bring the joy, warmth and heart of Jaipur into your home. We often find it’s the oldest patterns that now look the most fresh.
We work closely with local Artisans in Jaipur, India who transform these fabrics into our designs.
Its a funny old world and while we are well aware this venture is not quite going to necessarily make this world a better place we hope your Hill & May lampshade brings some warmth and mirth into your home while supporting artisans and makers in various corners of the world.
Hill & May also have a treasure trove of decorative, vintage and marbled papers we have collected over the years from Kyoto, Japan to Wiltshire, UK.
We personally make these paper shades with love and will be adding these special and rare shades onto the website as we make them. To find out more please email email@example.com
